What Is Walking Meditation?
The practice of walking meditation combines the physical action of walking with the mindful state of meditation. By engaging in this form of meditation, you can concentrate on the connection between your mind and body while walking indoors or outdoors. You have control over your walking speed and the duration of your session. During a session of walking meditation, you take a few steps for a designated period, paying attention to the movements and sensations in your body with each step.
The practice of Kinhin meditation is prevalent in various forms of Buddhism. It provides the benefits of both walking and sitting meditation by alternating between them.
4 Benefits of Walking Meditation
Engaging in walking meditation is a beneficial activity that enhances your physical and mental health. Some advantages of practicing walking meditation include:
Improves awareness.
Engaging in a walking meditation practice can aid in staying mindful of the present moment. This involves inwardly focusing your attention while your body is in motion and your thoughts may drift, ultimately enhancing your ability to concentrate and heightening your awareness of both your physical surroundings and mental state.
Improves sleep quality.
Meditation can be utilized to enhance the quality of your sleep. By practicing meditation, you can effectively manage stress, anxiety, and depression, which are the leading causes of insomnia. Consistent meditation can lower your heart rate, alleviate high blood pressure and stimulate the production of melatonin – a hormone that regulates sleep.
Offers mental clarity.
In the midst of our fast-paced daily routines, it can be difficult to carve out some personal time. However, practicing walking meditation can effectively calm down a restless mind and ward off potential interruptions, thus allowing you to dedicate more undivided attention towards your own inner well-being and spirituality.
Facilitates mind-body connection.
During this type of meditation, you focus on the physical sensations while walking. It is similar to a moving body scan where you take note of your physical state. Observe how your feet feel as they make contact with the ground, the movement of your arms as you walk and how your posture aligns itself as you move at a leisurely pace. The goal is to pay attention to these sensations and be present in the moment.

The practice of walking meditation is a form of exercise that can be carried out in any location that provides enough room to take a few comfortable steps, whether it be indoors or outdoors in a park.
Pick a place.
Engage in mindful walking in a secure area that provides ample space for you to move with ease. Although the surroundings need not be completely silent, they should be relatively free of disturbances.
Start walking.
Slow down your pace and take 10 to 20 steps in a straight line, placing each foot deliberately and moving at a measured, rhythmic pace. Once you reach the end of your path, turn around and walk back the same way with the same slow and deliberate speed.
Pay attention.
Observe the sensations in your legs as you raise them and bring them back down on the ground while walking. Keep an eye out for any other physical sensations that may arise during this activity. It is possible that your mind may wander as you walk, but you can use the sound and feel of your steps and breath to redirect your focus. If there are noises in the background that are difficult to ignore, acknowledge them before returning to focusing on your steps and breathing. Engage in this exercise daily for at least 10 to 15 minutes.
Practice.
Incorporating patience and consistent practice is essential for effective walking meditation. It’s highly recommended to integrate this practice into your daily routine to fully experience its benefits.
