The fundamental principle of shamatha, also known as mindfulness meditation, can be summarized as follows:

Maintain your focus on this but approach it gently; adopt an attitude of exploring and building a relationship with yourself.
- Acknowledge the thoughts : Without getting involved with the thoughts that come to mind, just observe them and release them. Remember to return to focusing on your breath. This is commonly referred to as “touch and go.” When a thought arises, acknowledge it gently, then allow it to pass.

Metta or lovingkindness
One of the widely practiced techniques for Buddhist meditation is Metta, also known as lovingkindness meditation. This form of meditation has several variations and typically involves starting with a period of śamatha to calm and open up the mind.
One method involves initiating the practice by sending well-wishes and affectionate emotions towards ourselves. Subsequently, we extend this sentiment to a beloved individual or pet before directing it towards someone we feel neutral about, and finally towards someone whom we have issues with or perceive as an adversary. Eventually, our love encompasses all living beings, irrespective of our personal feelings towards them. This meditation style emphasizes experiencing love and spreading it outward until the boundaries that usually segregate us into “self, acquaintance, enemy, etc.” disappear, leaving behind pure goodwill.
In order to inspire our practice, we often repeat slogans or mantras such as “May the love I have for myself and others flow freely” or “May all living beings, including myself, be safe, happy, and peaceful.” The four immeasurables is a traditional Buddhist invocation that begins with the wish for happiness and the elimination of suffering for all beings. Following an active metta practice, we sit in silent reflection for some time. It is important to note that this practice has the potential to greatly transform one’s perspective. The basic principles of Buddhist teachings involve certain core convictions that are meant to be meditated upon with concentration and focus. This meditation can be incorporated into a practice session. Among the most well-known meditations is “The Four Thoughts that Transform the Mind,” which aim to provide us with a compelling incentive to devote our time to practice instead of engaging in activities such as browsing social media or shopping at a mall for the next couple of hours. Briefly, these four thoughts are:
- I have the option to focus my efforts on cultivating wisdom, compassion, and the ability to assist others. Unlike certain individuals or creatures like animals, who lack this prospect, I acknowledge the value of this chance and pledge to not let it go to waste.
- One cannot predict the duration of this valuable life as everything is subject to change. The continuity of my being relies on inhalations and exhalations, therefore, there is no room for procrastination.
- The presence of a cause for everything that exists and the existence of consequences for every action highlights the reality of interdependence. Hence, it implies that our actions carry more weight than we perceive.
- At some point, we will inevitably part ways with all the material possessions we hold dear. Despite all our efforts, the gains derived from them are short-lived. Wouldn’t it be wiser to channel our energy towards cultivating invaluable qualities such as wisdom, compassion, and spiritual expertise? With this in mind, I hope that my meditation practice will aid me in achieving this objective.
